Ingredients you will need for this recipe:
- 200 g Camembert | soft cheese
- 1 red onion
- 100 g cream cheese
- 50 g soft butter
- 1 – 2 teaspoons whole caraway seeds
- 1 – 2 teaspoons paprika powder
- salt & pepper
- optional: 1 tablespoon wheat beer

How to make Obatzter | Bavarian Cheese Spread:

(1) Prepare the Onion
Prepare the red onion. Peel the onion, cut one half into fine pieces and the other half into thin slices.
(2) For the Cheese Mixture
Cut 200 g Camembert into cubes and place in a mixing bowl. Mash the Camembert with a fork. Add 50 g soft butter and 100 g cream cheese and mix with the mashed Camembert, until everything is well combined.
Mix in the finely diced onions, 1 – 2 teaspoons of whole caraway seeds and 1 – 2 teaspoons of paprika powder and season with salt and pepper.
(3) For the right consistency
Optionally, for the right consistency, you can add about 1 tablespoon of wheat beer. This gives the cheese mixture a creamy consistency.
Depending on the desired consistency, more or less beer can be added. You can also leave out the beer to give the spread a firmer consistency.
And if you prefer it non-alcoholic, you can also replace the beer with milk or cream.
(4) Let the Obatzter steep in the refrigerator
Place the Obatzter in the refrigerator for at least 1 hour to allow the ingredients to combine and develop their flavors.
(5) Serve the Obatzter and Enjoy
Arrange the Obatzter in a small serving bowl or on a serving board. Garnish with a small pinch of whole caraway seeds and paprika powder, finely chopped onion slices and optionally finely chopped chives and serve with rustic bread, soft pretzels or crackers.

Some Recipe Tips:
Storage: Freshly prepared Obatzter should not be stored for too long. If stored refrigerated and airtight, it will stay fresh for 2 to 3 days.
