New York Style Hot Dog with Sauerkraut & Onion Sauce

Recreate the iconic New York Street Food classic effortlessly at home: Delicious hot dog sausages and fluffy buns perfectly combined with a savory-sweet onion sauce and flavorful sauerkraut. Ingredients you will need for this recipe:
- 2 white onions
- 2 tablespoons of olive oil
- 4 tablespoons of ketchup
- 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or chili powder
- 1/2 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
- 100 ml of water
- 4 hot dog buns
- 4 hot dog sausages
- 100 g of sauerkraut
- mustard
How to make New York Style Hot Dog:
(1) For the Onion Sauce
Peel, halve, and thinly slice the onions.
In a pan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Sauté the onions until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add 4 tablespoons of ketchup, 1/4 teaspoon of cayenne pepper or chili powder, and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Briefly sauté, then deglaze with 100 ml of water. Simmer the onion sauce for approximately 10 minutes until it thickens.
(2) Prepare the Remaining Ingredients
Meanwhile, prepare the remaining ingredients.
In a pot, bring about 500 ml of water to a boil. Turn off the heat and warm the hot dog sausages in it for at least 5 minutes.
In a small pot, warm 100 g of sauerkraut over medium heat, stirring occasionally.
Warm the hot dog buns either on top of a toaster or in the oven at 100 °C.
(3) Assemble & Serve the Hot Dog
Once the onion sauce has thickened and the remaining ingredients are warmed, assemble the hot dog.
Fill the hot dog bun with sauerkraut, place the sausage on top of it, and then finish it with onion sauce and mustard.
